First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion

Two-year parish preparation

The Eucharist is the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. On the night before he died, Jesus took bread, blessed it and gave it to his disciples and said, “Take it, this is my body (Mark 14: 22-24).” Then Jesus took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “This is my blood, which will be given up for you. Do this in memory of me (Luke 22:19).” At every Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit and we are invited to an intimate union with our Lord.

At Holy Child Parish, children typically receive First Holy Communion in the spring of 2nd grade. Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion is a two-year process that incorporates classroom faith formation, family sessions and retreats.  Candidates are expected to participate weekly in Sunday Mass with their families and have an appreciation and understanding of the Eucharist, appropriate for their age.
